Blackpool
Blackpool has always been a special place. It has always been brash, over the top and colourful. It is the place to go and have a good time by the sea and defines what many people think of as the British Seaside.
Blackpool started as popular resort in the Victorian era. It was made by the Wakes Weeks of the Northern mill towns. Whole communities would get a week off in the summer whilst the mill machinery was serviced. Blackpool gained the Blackpool Tower - it was meant to rival the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Blackpool also had the Pleasure Beach with its roller coaster rides and big dipper.
The Illuminations started in the 1920s as a way of prolonging the holiday season into autumn.
Blackpool was a centre of ballroom dancing, with the Tower Ballroom, a centre of entertainment, with shows throughout the summer and a holiday centre. It had three piers, pleasure gardens and a lido, as well as the amusements and rides.
Blackpool changed with the times and never got stuck in the past. It is still a great place to go for entertainment and to experience the Great British Summer Holiday.
