Building at the seaside gave architects a chance to show off; a chance to design something a little more frivolous than would be seen inland. In some cases this meant ultra modern and stylish, such as the De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill-on-Sea.

The 20s & 30s was a time of huge expansion in numbers of people taking holidays in the UK. This lead to a building boom in seaside towns.

Lidos

The lido, or outdoor swimming pool was one of the most popular new buildings of the 20s and 30s.

Seaside hotels

The Roundhouse, Bournemouth

Some trendy new hotels were built in the 20s, 30s, 50s and 60s.
